Spinal Cord Stimulation or SCS
Spinal Cord Stimulation or SCS – is a therapy that treats chronic pain patients by using mild electrical impulses to mask signals of pain. This therapy involves a trial procedure which allows the patient to test the efficacy of the therapy without undergoing a significant surgical procedure. Spinal cord stimulation is a therapy that can assist patients who wish to avoid using opioids or other medication to manage their pain.
Trial Procedure
The trial procedure is an out-patient procedure typically performed in a physician’s medical office or surgical facility. During the trial, a physician will place small wires called leads over the location of the spinal cord that is causing the patient pain. During this procedure, the patient is given a local anesthetic and fluoroscopy (or x-ray) is used to determine the correct lead placement. The trial typically lasts anywhere from 3 – 10 days during which the patient is able to turn on and off the stimulation as well as adjusting the programming of the system. A successful trial is one in which the patient receives greater than 50% pain relief.
Permanent Procedure
Following a successful trial, patients undergo a permanent procedure. During the permanent procedure a generator, not unlike a pacemaker, is implanted to provide power to the leads.
